Erik Fender (Than Tsideh / Than Tside’h “Sunbird”) is a contemporary Native American potter from San Ildefonso Pueblo in New Mexico. Born in 1970, he comes from a distinguished family of potters. He began learning pottery at a young age (around 10) from his mother, Martha Appleleaf. He belongs to an illustrious lineage: his great-aunt was the renowned potter Maria Martinez, a key figure in the revival and popularization of San Ildefonso black-on-black pottery. He signs his work with his Tewa name, Than Tsideh (meaning Sunbird).
