Mary Moses is a Nuu-chah-nulth (Nootka) basket weaver known for finely woven grass baskets. Nuu-chah-nulth (formerly called Nootka) and closely related Makah artists on the Northwest Coast (primarily Vancouver Island and the Olympic Peninsula) have a long tradition of creating wrapped-twined “trinket” baskets (called pika-uu in Nuu-chah-nulth) from bear grass or other sea/swamp grasses, often combined with cedar bark. These small, decorative lidded baskets became popular for trade/sale in the late 19th20th centuries and frequently feature pictorial designs such as whalers, canoes, whales, birds, or geometric patterns.
