A wonderfully unusual French antique from the mid-19th century, this ironstone cuspidor caught my eye for its distinctive shape and beautiful aged character. Two sculptural side embellishments with spouts give it an unmistakable silhouette, while the gently sloping top leads to its central opening. With its natural patina and signs of age, it is one of those wonderfully unexpected pieces that adds character to your collected home.

Cuspidors were once commonplace, particularly in an era when tobacco was part of everyday life. Today, they have an intriguing connection to wine tasting, where a vessel known as a crachoir is used to spit wine after tasting rather than swallowing it. Not exactly glamorous, but a fascinating glimpse into the life of an everyday objectand one more reason I love antiques: there is almost always a story hiding in plain sight. Turned upside down, its flat underside also makes an unexpected little pedestal for a favorite piece of porcelain or a small stack of old books.
