A Route 66 Kachina doll is a distinct tourist/trading-post style. As automobile travel boomed along Route 66, Hopi artists (and sometimes Navajo or other Pueblo carvers) produced simplified, standardized figures specifically for sale to travelers at roadside stands, trading posts, and gift shops. These are notceremonial or “real” katsina dolls in the religious sensethey are folk art souvenirs, often with quirky proportions, bright commercial paints, and amalgamated design elements that don’t always match specific traditional katsinam.
