The Chemehuevi (also spelled Chemehuevi orNuwu), a Southern Paiute tribe native to the Mojave Desert regions of southeastern California, western Arizona, and southern Nevada, have a rich tradition of basketry and child-rearing practices that incorporate cradles and toys. While specific “toy cradle dolls” (miniature cradleboards with dolls for play) are not as extensively documented as in neighboring tribes like the Hopi or Apache, they align with broader Great Basin and California Indian traditions where small-scale cradleboards served as toys for girls to imitate mothering roles. These toys were often crafted from natural materials like willow, reeds, and fibers, reflecting the tribe’s expertise in weaving.
