Techniques

  • For best results, seal the surface prior to painting.
  • Prime the surface. Chroma Mural Paint Polar is recommended.
  • For best results, apply paint when temperatures are between 65-75 degrees F.
  • Avoid painting when humidity is above 70%, or in rain, mist or fog; or if poor weather is predicted in the next 48-72 hours.
  • Start painting from the top and work your way down.
  • Work from the background to the foreground.
  • Use wet-over-dry to build dimension and create realism.
  • Apply an isolation coat between the paint and the varnish and let dry 48 hours before varnishing.
  • Apply an outdoor varnish with a brush. Test before varnishing the entire mural. Occasionally, a varnish can become cloudy as it dries. This happens because the varnish was applied too heavily, overworked, or applied during unfavorable weather conditions.
  • Most varnishes should be applied when air temperatures are between 55-75 degrees F. Do not apply in direct sunlight. Do not apply to wet surfaces or if rain or heavy dew is expected within 48-72 hours.
  • Follow directions on vanish packaging.
  • For more best practices, read Mural Guide.
