Hopi Pueblo jewelry, particularly pin pendants, is a cherished form of Native American artistry originating from the Hopi people, who have inhabited the arid mesas of northeastern Arizona for over a millennium. Known as the “Peaceful Ones,” the Hopi developed their distinctive silversmithing techniques in the 1940s, influenced by Spanish metalworking but evolving into a unique style called overlay. This involves soldering two sheets of sterling silver together: the top layer is cut with intricate designs (often inspired by nature, clans, or spiritual symbols like kachinas, clouds, feathers, or animals), then oxidized to create a blackened contrast against the polished silver backing. These pieces are lightweight, symbolic, and versatilemany double as both pins (with a secure clasp on the back) and pendants (with a bail for a chain).
