VictorCoochwytewa (19222011) was a renowned Hopi silversmith from Second Mesa, Arizona, celebrated for his pioneering contributions to the Hopi overlay technique in Native American jewelry. As a World War II veteran who earned a Purple Heart, he returned to the Hopi mesas in 1946 and apprenticed under esteemed artists Fred Kabotie and Paul Saufkie. His career spanned over 60 years, producing pieces now held in museums and private collections worldwide. Coochwytewa’s hallmarka distinctive rain cloud symboloften appears alongside the Hopi Silvercraft Guild sunface mark, signifying authenticity and guild affiliation established in 1949.
