Jemez Pueblo pottery, from the Walatowa (Jemez) people in north-central New Mexico, features hand-coiled clay pieces often in earth tones like red slips over tan, with stone-polished glossy areas combined with matte finishes, painted or sgraffito (etched/carved) designs. Pottery-making there declined in the 1700s but revived in the 20th century, influenced by nearby Zia Pueblo, and modern Jemez artists are known for innovative forms including storytellers, figurines, melon bowls, wedding vases, and especially animal figurines and 3D sculpted pieces.
