Michael Kanteena is a renowned potter from the Laguna Pueblo in New Mexico, celebrated for his handcrafted pottery that revives ancient Native American styles, particularly those of the Ancestral Puebloans (historically referred to as Anasazi) and Mimbres cultures. Born to parents Wallace and Rosemary Kanteena, he holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Eastern New Mexico University (Portales, NM, 1981). His artistic evolution deepened around six years prior to the early 2000s, inspired by a desire to reconnect with his ancestral roots tracing back to Chaco Canyon. To achieve this, Kanteena meticulously studied archaeological catalogs of ancient pottery forms, allowing him to recreate their aesthetic and techniques with modern precision while honoring traditional methods.
