This beautiful Mata Ortiz (Casas Grandes) pottery piece is a classic example of black-on-black (or blackware) style, where the vessel is crafted from dark clay, highly polished for a glossy finish, and decorated using sgraffitoa technique where contrasting slip (often black) is applied and then carefully etched or scratched away to reveal intricate geometric patterns underneath. This creates sharp, high-contrast designs with a deep, matte black etched appearance against the burnished black surface.

The pot features a rounded, olla-like form with a distinctive wavy or scalloped rim, and bold, abstract geometric motifs: prominent triangles, stepped or terraced elements, zigzag lines, dotted grids, and interlocking shapes that echo ancient Paquim (Casas Grandes) prehistoric designs from 12001450 CE.
