PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: Writing Your Artist Bio

Your artwork tells one part of your storybut sometimes you need the words to go with it.

Whether youre creating a website, applying for an exhibition, submitting work to a gallery, participating in an art festival, or introducing yourself on social media, a strong artist bio helps people understand who you are and what you bring to your creative work.

In this hands-on Professional Development workshop, well take some of the mysteryand discomfortout of writing about yourself. Well look at what belongs in an artist bio, what to leave out, and how to communicate your experience and creative identity in a way that feels professional, authentic, and genuinely like you.

Well also discuss the often-confusing difference between an artist bio and an artist statement, and when you might need each one.

Well Cover:

  • What makes an effective artist bio
  • Artist bio vs. artist statement
  • First person vs. third person
  • How to describe your art, background, and experience
  • Writing a bio when you’re a newer artist
  • What to includeand what to leave out
  • Avoiding clichs and overly complicated language
  • Adapting your bio for websites, exhibitions, applications, social media, and other uses

Then we’ll put it into practice. Guided exercises will help you develop your story and begin writing and refining your own bio.

Leave With Something You Can Use

Our goal is for you to develop three useful versions:

Full Bio approximately 150200 words
Short Bio approximately 5075 words
Mini Bio one or two sentences

A workshop worksheet is included. You’re welcome to bring a laptop or tablet if you’d like to write digitally, but it isn’t required.
